Mekdela Amba is a historically significant mountain stronghold in South Wollo that served as an important center of political and military power. Located about 110 km from Dessie and 29 km from Ajibar, the fortress remains closely connected with the life and legacy of Emperor Tewodros II and the nineteenth-century history of Ethiopia.

Visitors can trace the imperial past through the Sebastopol Cannon, the Emperor’s defensive trenches, the palace remains, the former treasury, and the historic church ruins. The site is increasingly developing as a heritage tourism destination with local services such as lodging, food, shower facilities, and guided visits.
